Teaching

“One of the greatest joys of my life has been sharing my love of guitar with my students, whether they are picking up a guitar for the first time, coming back to guitar, or any stop along the way.”

Shari Kane

I have been offering in-person lessons since 1977, and more recently have found Skype lessons to be a wonderful resource for students who either can’t travel to an instructor, or just prefer to learn from home.

I love to teach many styles of guitar, from beginner to experienced. I have a well developed program that uses songs to build skills quickly, and expand student’s understanding of the fretboard. I have taught children as young as 4, and seniors in their 80’s.

I also have a great interest in sharing fingerstyle country blues and slide guitar. This has been my lifelong passion, to break down and articulate the nuances of this wonderful style of music, from Piedmont to Delta, Reverend Gary Davis to Robert Lockwood, Mississippi John Hurt to Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson to Johnny Shines, Robert Johnson to Tommy Johnson.

Recently I’ve developed a simple and wonderful system for learning to take solos, that doesn’t depend on scales or theory. I’d love to share it with you.

Working with Shari, a door opened in my mind that allowed me to see my fretboard in a new way, and I’m finally able to build skills that will allow me to play spontaneously.” ~ Valerie Turner, Piedmont Bluz

Shari Kane is an excellent guitarist. Next to Johnny Shines, she is the best interpreter of Robert Johnson’s material that I have ever heard.” ~ Robert Jones, Blues performer and historian.

“Shari is one of the absolute best guitar teachers I’ve ever had! She’s articulate, extremely knowledgeable and oh so patient. I walk away from every lesson with something new and exciting to work on. And she writes tab upside down for heaven’s sake!!!! Amazing!” ~ Annie Capps, professional musician.

Before I met Shari Kane I made several attempts to learn guitar in different settings and nothing stuck. I thought I was just not musical enough so I sold my instrument and for 20 years I accepted the fact that I would never realize my dream. My first lesson with Shari changed my mind forever. Shari is an expert at assessing skill level and setting a pace that builds technique and confidence with each and every lesson. Shari gave me back my dream. I am so grateful.” ~Robin Richards
